ESG Quick Review:

So many colorful characters we can meet!

What is a story without characters? Uneventful beyond words. Characters are what make games (and stories in general) fun to watch. Some characters are kind hearted souls we want to empathize with, others do awful things for understandable reasons, some have a great sense of humor, and some characters would probably set all your belongings on fire to see the look on your face. You can meet all kinds of colorful characters in the world of video games. So, sit down in your front row seats as we go over some exciting examples!

  • Shovel Knight

Practically the face of indie gaming, this throwback to 80’s classics like Megaman and The Legend of Zelda 2 bolsters intense gameplay with that nostalgic 8-bit graphic style and chiptune music. After his close friend Shield Knight is captured, the titular Shovel Knight must travel the land and face The Enchantress and her Order of No Quarter. As such, you will encounter an assortment of colorful characters from merchants to enemies and bosses. All of these elements come together to make a certified indie classic. In fact, this game kickstarted a franchise that further explores the dynamics and the backstories of previous bosses and further flesh them out. This game is so beloved that he even managed to be represented in Nintendo’s Super Smash Brothers as an assist trophy. King Knight, Plague Knight, Mole Knight, and more all wait to raise their blades at you.

  • No Straight Roads

Start up those lights and hook up those speakers! Roll back those curtains and put your hands in the air! Coming to you live from Vinyl City, for your listening pleasure, Bunkbed Junction! Oh dear! They did not land that audition! Well shucks, what a shame. If only there was a way to bring rock and roll into the public sphere and prove that it isn’t outdated. Oh! What’s that? The gang is going on a city tour? And at the venues of the NSR officials? Sounds a little suspicious, but I suppose there are no straight roads on the path to fame and fortune. Unique boss fights, killer soundtrack, a shiny bright art style, and of course what performance would be complete without colorful personalities?

  • It Takes Two

Alright, how about we take a nice breather from all this excitement? What’s more relaxing than couples counseling against your will at the mercy of a sentient book that transforms you into a doll? In this game, you play as married couple Cody and May who find themselves in that exact situation. Why are they at the mercy of a talking book? Because the two of them are going through a very serious rough patch in their marriage and it is seriously affecting their daughter. Now the duo must traverse the gigantic world of their home (now that they have been shrunken), and make their way back to their daughter in hopes she can turn them back to normal.

This game is more or less the personification of two player games. Every single challenge here requires you and your friend/significant other/sibling/whichever to work together and get to the end of these levels. Through your journey, you will meet all kinds of friends and foes ranging from squirrel soldiers to sentient toys.

  • Cult of the Lamb

The dark woods are not a place of mercy for the meek. Four sinister bishops, all demanding sacrifice. The Land of the Old Faith is home to fearsome demons, slithering monsters, and of course manic cults. You must travel the lands as the mighty Lambert. Crownbearer of Narinder the lord of Death, and slay the four bishops of the Old Faith. Leshy the lord of Chaos, Kallamar the lord of Pestillence, Heket the lord of Famine, and Shamura the lord of War each rule over a land of their own and need to be taken down. In order to take them down, not only do you need to collect different powerful relics, but you must also be ready to care your fledgling followers so that you may feed on their prayers.

  • Pizza Tower

Mama Mia! Everyone loves a working man who can face down the big dogs and save his small business. Sadly when his pizzeria is in debt, he is visited by a sentient eldritch abomination known only as Pizzaface who says that he feels like destroying Peppino’s, so he’s going to blow it up with a big laser. Every businessman has been through this kind of thing, so we need to help Peppino climb the infamous Pizza Tower and stop the crazed eldritch monster, as you do. Throughout this journey, not only do we learn more about Peppino, but we also meet his business partner Gustavo and his rival turned best friend, Brick the Rat. Give money to Mr. Stick to not only pay off some debt, but also access interesting and wacky boss fights including Pepperman, Vigilante, The Noise, Mr. [???], and the sinister Pizzaface!

  • Undertale

The face of quirky character rosters! Long ago there were two races, humans and monsters. One day, war broke out between the two races with humans victorious, trapping them within the bowels of Mt. Ebbot. You play as a human named Frisk, exploring the bowels of this underground prison made into a home. On paper, you may be inclined to fear the monsters who dwell below. Skeletons, ghosts, killer robots, knights, and generals may all seem intimidating on paper. However, when you get to know these folks better, you can make some great pals. Although, this game also leaves you to your own devices. Yes, the monsters of this world can all be your best pals, but that does not exactly mean either of you are safe here. After all, you are not bound to one single ending in real life, are you? This truly is… an Undertale.

  • Inscryption

You open your eyes and the first thing you are greeted by is a pair not your own. Your vision is only greeted by candlelight. The old man in front of you proposes a game. A game within a game. A game within the dark. Sacrifices made in blood to give yourself animal companions. And yet trapped within the darkness, locked inside this cabin, you are far from alone. A greater narrative, puzzles within games within games within a lost narrative. As our strings are pulled, we must pull them back and look up to see the puppeteer’s true face. Prophecies and corruption, conspiracies and wonder, all hidden within these inscryptions. Just stack your hand and ring the golden bell.

Fully synchronized sound, spectacular colorized light, and for the first time ever, the ink and paint answers to the push of a button on these fancy devices known as “game controllers.” You will face all kinds of crazy baddies from gambling frogs and evil flowers to robots and ghost trains! Gorgeous painted backgrounds, orchestrated jazz soundtrack, and of course bosses and NPCs made with digitally colored hand drawn animations. Don’t forget to get a nice helping of the DLC. So step on up and take a seat! The show will begin momentarily.

  • Deltarune

Ah barnacles! What can be crazier than an Earthbound inspired RPG with quirky characters? I know! Two RPGs by the same developer! Deltarune is certainly an odd game for Undertale games to play. We witness familiar characters from that game in unique story roles as we venture into a whole new narrative. We follow a group of friends including a human, a monster, and a prince from the dark. Their mission? To either fulfill or break a prophecy that will dictate the fate of the world. As of writing this, there are currently 4 chapters available, a two chapter demo with 3 and 4 available for $24.99. Will the prophecy collapse like a house of cards? Will it stand like a city? Well, don’t change the channel and say your prayers, because soon we will tend this garden and go darker, darker, yet darker. Enemies and allies. Darkners and Lightners. This next experiment will be very… very… interesting…. What do you two think?

Ten Hut!

Alright folks! We got a nice lineup of games with fun character casts that’ll keep you entertained! From strategic RPGs and colorful platformers to horrific deck builders and rambunctious run n guns. All kinds of sinister bosses and awesome allies to side with. So set up that stage and put down that script. Rehearsals are over and we! Are! Live!
