No list of best party-based games is complete without mention of at least one game from the Persona series. Beginning in 1996, these Japanese RPGs follow a group of high schoolers doing various unusual things in Japan. While it’s hard to choose from the 20 or so games, remakes, and rereleases, Persona 5 is said to be the best to start with.
This game’s storyline follows a newly transferred high school student in Tokyo, who has been falsely accused of assault. He and his classmates form a group called the “Phantom Thieves of Hearts” to change criminals’ hearts and stage grand heists using powers awarded by their “personas.”
We do have to issue a content warning as there is mature content in this game. More information on this can be found on the game’s Steam page.

Another classic of the party-based game genre is of course the Final Fantasy game series.
Not counting the sequels, prequels, spinoffs, and other related games we’re looking at 16 Final Fantasy games released over 35 years, which sounds awfully daunting. However, with little story continuity between games, you are free to begin with whichever game you wish.
Pro tip: We recommend that those new to the series begin with Final Fantasy VII. But if you’re looking for far prettier graphics with the same storyline, try out Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the highest-rated Final Fantasy game on Steam, follows ex-soldier and current mercenary, Cloud, who has joined the rebel group AVALANCHE to help bring down the Shinra Electric Power Company.
Note that this remake covers half of the original Final Fantasy VII storyline. The second half is covered in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth which has not yet been released on Steam.
"The most beautiful, nostalgic, very evolved remake. 10/10 would recommend. Music is ON POINT." secretagentman on Steam.
